To the Editor:
I agree with Kelly Denue asking what it takes to get a job with the City of Syracuse Fire Department! On top of owning a home in the City, paying City taxes, scoring a 100 on the civil service test, and no criminal record; My father, who gave over 30 years of his life to this honorable profession serving City of Syracuse residents and a longstanding history of family members who have worked for the City does not help either! I am glad that I did not pay the $1000 to the lawyer who is filing suit against the City, because, it appears that does not help you either. Heck, even having a loved one die in the line of duty as a Syracuse Firefighter does not help you get a job with the Syracuse Fire Department. So I ask, other than race or gender, what DOES it take to get a job on the Syracuse Fire Department? The test scores were not used... Skipping hundreds of qualified applicants and hiring people who scored as low as 85%? What made them better than the rest? It would be nice if the City answered some of these questions for the hundreds of people who are wondering.
